Iceland

Iceland

Iceland is famous for its renewable energy programme that supplies clean electricity and hot water to nearly every resident. They use environment-friendly paper products and cleaning products. All takeaway cups are charged and the proceeds are donated to NGOs. Iceland has clearly labelled recycling and compost containers, with clear photos on top of them showing the kind of items that should go into each container to promote recycling. On 5th June, 2018, which is celebrated globally as World Environment Day, Iceland planted 1,200 trees to offset the carbon emission produced by guests. Interestingly, Icelandic water is pure spring water and you can drink it directly from the tap. Thus, the country has been able to successfully reduce the use of bottled water, the plastic of which has disastrous consequences on our planet. The country is proud of its sustainability efforts and pledges to go completely green soon.

Switzerland

Switzerland

Switzerland is the second greenest country in the world. The country has one of the highest waste‑recycling rates, of more than 50%. It invests heavily in developing future environmental protection techniques, thus ranking first in terms of setting up green technology enterprises. The Swiss need for energy is largely powered by solar and geothermal energy. The concept of car pooling has been adopted by 1 in 60 of the Swiss. This is how Switzerland maintains its lush green meadows and its natural heritage, with active participation from its citizens.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is famous for its breath‑taking scenery and landscape. The citizens of the country use renewable energy to avoid the production of greenhouse gases. Costa Rica hopes to be the first carbon neutral country in the world by restricting the amount of fossil fuels used. Over 25% of Costa Rica is environmentally protected. The protected areas have been converted to parks, national reserves, forests wetlands and animal refuges. Costa Rica is also home to an incredible number of waterfalls. Not only do these waterfalls attract tourists, they are a primary source of power for the country. Hydropower provides around 80% of the total power. Other than being one of the greenest countries in the world, Costa Rica is also considered to be one with the happiest people in it.
